Someone gave me a compliment the
other day…said I always looked like a queen.
Hmm…well I suppose I am a princess since I am the King of Kings daughter
and if you know me you will remember that I am queen sized, haha.
Really I think what she meant was that I
usually present myself as “finished.” I
wear modest, classic or fashionable clothes. I learned to apply my makeup from
a professional makeup artist. I wear accessories that compliment my face and
body type and my clothing choices. Why?
Because I represent the Kingdom of God to everyone I meet and I want to be a
good ambassador for Jesus.
Our outward appearance is not as
important as what is in our inmost being, but it is all the world can see. So, what do we, as modern Christian women, do
with that? Do we adhere to the tenets of
my Grandma’s church? They don’t allow
the women to cut their hair, wear pants, or makeup. Do we look like some of my fellow homeschool
moms (and their matching children) in their 1990’s denim jumpers and fluffy
hair bows? (One of my daughter’s
favorite stories is how a new acquaintance said to her, “but you don’t look homeschooled!”) What kind of
message does that sort of presentation give to a modern world? Would they suppose that to follow Jesus means
they will have to dress weirdly? That
isn’t what we are trying to say, is it?
Because there isn’t a Christian
fashion industry we feel quite worldly when we choose to be a part of the
existing one. However we are trying to
communicate a message of Good News to a world that always gages its interest
based on the messenger. Jesus said we were to be in this world but not of
it…wise as serpents but gentle as doves.
Can we apply that to how we dress and present ourselves? We also have been told to take the good and
leave the bad behind …we can do that
can’t we? What about the admonition
concerning good stewardship? How many of
us have wasted good money on clothes we never should have purchased? Let’s all
make an effort to do the most with what God has given us…our bodies, our
talents, our money, our hair! Be modest, don’t make your brother stumble
(he will look, and you know it.) Be contemporary and wise in your fashion
choices. Get some help from your friends!!
There is so much more to this than
this space has room for. The beauty that
waits to be revealed in your life can change the lives of those around you. It
is a reflection of your Creator. The
enemy of your soul would like to keep you pushed down and covered up. To keep you focused on what you think you
don’t have rather than celebrating the beauty that you are!
Satan
is always saying that we are too much or too little…too much trouble, too
much talk, too much effort to understand, too injured from your past, he says
you are too little or weak to do something, or too poor, or too stupid, or too
ugly, too fat, too skinny, or not educated enough, or not quiet or loud enough,
not brave enough…anyone heard some of these?
Don’t let satan (or other people he uses) lie to you about who you
are. Look to the Creator of your heart
to find out what you have to offer.
Whatever you bring to the table won’t be just
like your sisters. Each offering is
unique and uniquely beautiful. Some
women light up a room with their smiles, others give the best hugs, others make
the very best coffee and offer it to all that will come. Some women can total a household budget and
find extra money in all the right places and it is a beautiful thing to
behold. Some women can paint pictures,
or decorate homes to make them more receiving.
Others draw children to them with their kind hearts and tender
mercies. Yet others can run a company
and do a fine job of it…using the tools that God gave them as women to be successful.
They don’t do it just like a man, they don’t have to.
But we all can
look good while we do all those things, you know? There is a great book by Norma Day called Seven Secrets to Timeless Beauty that
will help you get started on a good makeover. Or call me and we will have
lunch.
